Sperm Donor Requirements

Different agencies may have varying sperm donor requirements, but for the most part, potential donors must be:

• Between the ages of 18-39
• Actively pursuing a college degree (or already have one)
• Living within commuting distance of the sperm bank
• Legally allowed to work in the US
• Able to donate 1-2 times a week
• Committed to the program for at least 12 months
• Able to practice abstinence from any type of ejaculation 3-4 days prior to collection

All physical characteristics, such as height, weight, etc. are not relevant.

Sperm Donor Screenings and Processes

After potential donors complete an initial application, they'll undergo a semen analysis to ensure the health of their sperm. They'll also receive testing for infectious diseases, undergo a physical examination every six months, and have blood and urine tests every three months. Additionally, applicants must fill out a detailed questionnaire regarding their medical and genetic history. Some sperm banks may require donors to attend counseling sessions with a qualified mental health professional. The final step before donation involves submitting supplemental materials, including a handwriting sample, an audio recording, a baby picture, and sometimes an adult picture.
